European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.

Other Developments in the News

In related judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked efforts to cut security grants to states which resist specific federal immigration rules. The judge ruled the case was “another example” of linking government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Approval was given for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city ahead of the holiday period, alongside an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to accept a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, following concluding a formal agreement with Washington.

Additionally, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit to demand the stripping of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in Washington DC.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with historical international actions.
